At Rodman for Kids, our Theatre for Kids program is about more than seeing a show – it’s about what happens because of the experience.
Through our partnership with Lyric Stage Company of Boston, we’re investing in Theatre for Kids programming that brings students and families into the world of live theatre in ways that are immersive, educational, and designed to spark curiosity long after the curtain falls.
Together, Rodman for Kids and Lyric Stage designed this partnership around three distinct, but interconnected experiences – each meeting students and families at a different point in their Theatre for Kids journey. From experiencing a performance, to exploring how theatre is made, to returning with family members, these activations are intentionally layered to deepen learning, reinforce reflection, and expand access over time.
Learning that goes beyond the performance
Student Matinee & Post-Show Discussion
Last week, students attended a dedicated matinee performance and engaged directly with the stage manager and sound designer in a facilitated pre-show discussion. These conversations helped students reflect on what they saw, ask questions, and connected storytelling on stage to broader themes of creativity, collaboration, and expression.
Back Stage: Educational Experience
Through Lyric Stage’s Back Stage program, students will explore the technical and creative roles that bring a production to life – from lighting and sound to props and costume design. This hands-on learning experience introduces young people to theatre as both an art form and a potential career pathway, expanding how they see themselves in creative spaces.
Family Access to Live Theatre
Families connected to Rodman for Kids will receive access to tickets throughout Lyric Stage’s season, creating opportunities for shared experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. By removing financial barriers, this component ensures theatre can be enjoyed together – building confidence, connection, and belonging.
“These experiences are intentionally designed to go beyond watching a performance. When students can reflect on what they’ve seen, explore how theatre is made, and return with their loved ones, it reinforces learning and encourages young people to see how they can engage with the performing arts – whether as audience members, creators, or collaborators. That’s where Theatre for Kids has its greatest impact.” – Bill Stiles, Director of Programs at Rodman for Kids
Partnerships like this one with Lyric Stage are central to how Theatre for Kids continues to grow – creating inclusive, meaningful experiences that meet young people where they are and invite them to imagine what’s possible.
As we look ahead, collaborations like this help ensure that Theatre for Kids continues to evolve – reaching new students, deepening impact, and inspiring what comes next.
