Brightened Futures 4/12: The Power of Showing Up Every Day

What does it really take to change a young person’s future? Sometimes, it’s not a big moment or a major milestone. Sometimes, it’s something much simpler: a meal, a pair of shoes, or the confidence to walk into a job interview feeling prepared.

That’s the kind of impact Tammy Mello, President & CEO of The Key Program, sees every day – and it’s exactly what the Charity Partner Program makes possible.

More than 30 years into her career in child welfare, Tammy had a moment that brought everything into focus. During COVID, she reconnected with a young woman she had worked with 27 years earlier when she was her DCF worker. It was a powerful reminder that even when impact isn’t immediate or visible, it lasts.

Today, she leads The Key Program, supporting children and families through some of the most challenging moments in their lives.

Recently, a 17-year-old in one of their programs shared what she was most grateful for: food for her family, hygiene products, and an outfit and shoes for a job interview. At first glance, these may seem like small things, but they are often the difference between staying stuck and moving forward, as well as the things traditional funding typically does not cover.

That’s where partnerships come into play.

As a longtime Charity Partner, The Key Program has experienced firsthand how year-round support through Rodman for Kids goes far beyond fundraising. It strengthens the organization itself, creating opportunities for leadership development, collaboration, and connection across a network of youth-serving nonprofits.

It brings Key Program staff together across regions, creates space for new leaders to step up, and fosters relationships that lead to new ideas, new partnerships, and better outcomes.

Ultimately, it allows organizations like The Key Program to “elevate their game,” going beyond the basics and creating meaningful, lasting impact for the young people they serve.
