Meet Bill Stiles: Theatre for Kids Program Manager

Rodman for Kids is excited to welcome Bill Stiles as our new Theatre for Kids Program Manager! With a rich background in education, nonprofit leadership, and a lifelong love for theatre, Bill brings both passion and experience to this role. We sat down with him to learn more about his journey, his vision for Theatre for Kids, and his love for the stage.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to Rodman for Kids?

Bill: On the professional side, I started my career as a job coach for adults on the autism spectrum, then after getting my M.Ed. in School Counseling I pivoted to what was my dream job as a high school guidance counselor. When I realized that the non-profit sector was exciting to me, I made the move and haven’t looked back. I’ve spent five years in various roles around curriculum development, grants management, partnership operations, and programs team leadership. On the theatrical side I’ve been a performer/backstage support in productions since I was about 15 years old and I have a fine arts minor concentrated in theatre. Bringing my professional and personal passions together made coming to Rodman for Kids an easy decision.

What excites you most about your new role as the Theatre for Kids Program Manager?

Bill: Youth can’t see themselves in spaces they don’t have access to. Theatre is a place where kids can see skills utilized in unique an exciting ways, and reflect on not only the material they see, but all of the professionals coming together to make the show a reality. What excites me most is providing the opportunity for kids to be able to go see a show and answer for themselves if it’s a space they could see themselves thriving in moving forward.

What do you think makes Theatre for Kids special compared to other arts programs?

Bill: There are a lot of amazing arts programs, but what sets Theatre for Kids apart to me is that it really is a launching off point for kids who may have zero exposure to the arts. This presents the arts to them in a way where they can digest and reflect. Sometimes we can assume the first step has already been taken, and I love that Theatre for Kids is intentional about being that first step. Theatre for Kids can open the door for kids to access all the other opportunities at their fingertips now that they have an understanding.

If you could play any role in a Broadway show, who would you choose and why?

Bill: I’m cheating a bit, but if I had to pick an on-stage role it would be Freddie from Chess because I love a character who is their own worst enemy. Realistically, I’d love to be backstage as an assistant stage manager or stagehand. Being able to help elevate the incredible talent of Broadway performers in a small way would be it’s own reward.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Bill: I was told to “make the loud mistake” from a chorus director (shoutout Mr. Kniffen) and that’s really stuck with me on several levels. Loud mistakes get corrected and often aren’t repeated; quiet ones become habits. It also empowered me to make mistakes and for that to be okay, in doing anything you’re going to take chances and make mistakes. Make the loud ones.

We’re so excited to have Bill on board and can’t wait to see how he helps Theatre for Kids grow and reach even more young people!

🎭 Welcome to the team, Bill! 🎭
