Story 3 of 100: CUE the Impact!

How Our New CUE Model is Transforming Theatre for Kids

At Rodman for Kids, we believe that access to the arts should be more than a moment—it should be a movement. That’s why, as we celebrate reaching 100,000 kids through our Theatre for Kids program, we’re proud to introduce a new model that will deepen our impact and enhance every child’s experience: the CUE Model.

CUE stands for Connect, Uplift, Empower—our three organizational pillars that now guide every experience we provide with Theatre for Kids. It’s our way of making sure each show isn’t just a night out, but a chance to ignite imagination, build understanding, and spark something lasting in every young audience member.

🎬 CONNECT: Why are we going to a show?

Before the curtain rises, it’s important to create context. The “Connect” component ensures that kids attending our shows understand the why—why this performance matters, how it relates to their lives, and what they might look out for as the story unfolds.

This might look like:

  • Activities before or after the show to build excitement

  • Printouts or discussion prompts for chaperones to share with their group

  • Sensory prep tools, like social stories or expectations guides for sensory-friendly performances

Whether it’s a school band attending a symphony or a group of first-time theatergoers seeing a musical, Connect ensures that every group arrives at the theatre feeling prepared and included.

🌟 UPLIFT: This is the experience itself.

The show is the heart of the program—and Uplift is about ensuring that heart is beating for every child. This phase is where the magic happens. But it’s also where accessibility and equity take center stage.

We Uplift by:

  • Incorporating sensory-friendly elements like adjusted lighting, quiet spaces, and tactile activities

  • Providing ASL interpretation, captioning, and more

  • Making sure every child—regardless of background or ability—can fully engage in the experience

Because going to the theatre should never be a privilege. It should be a right.

💡 EMPOWER: What am I taking away from this experience?

The most powerful stories don’t end when the curtain falls. Empower ensures kids continue reflecting, growing, and dreaming long after the applause.

This looks like:

  • Post-show activities and reflection prompts

  • Talkbacks with cast and crew, theatre tours, and learning workshops

  • Opportunities for feedback and participation in shaping the future of Theatre for Kids

We also provide packets with resources for further engagement—so whether a child wants to try out acting or just better understand the story’s themes, they have the tools to do so.

Why the CUE Model Matters

Traditionally, when offering an “educational component,” programs ask: Do we have one? At Rodman for Kids, we’re shifting the question to: How do we make every part of this experience educational, empowering, and equitable?

The CUE Model is our answer. It ensures that every Theatre for Kids opportunity is:

  • Thoughtfully prepared

  • Fully inclusive

  • Deeply meaningful

And most importantly, it helps every child walk away with more than just memories—they leave with new ideas, new confidence, and a stronger sense of self.

As we celebrate 100 stories for 100,000 kids, the CUE Model is our commitment to making every single story count. We are breaking down barriers to provide access so that every child can develop their own relationship with performing arts, and realize that all are welcome in this space. Because when kids are connected, uplifted, and empowered, there’s no limit to what they can imagine—or become.
