Blue Man Group Sensory Friendly Performance

Rodman for Kids, in partnership with Blue Man Group, Broadway in Boston, and the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, brought a special, sensory friendly performance of Blue Man Group to Boston!

Why did we partner to host a sensory friendly performance? Because we believe EVERY young person, regardless of ability, deserves access to the opportunities they need to dream, grow, and succeed. We want to make sure that EVERYONE gets to participate in the party that is a Blue Man Group performance! “We know that an autism diagnosis can be a financial burden to many families,” Flutie Foundation self-advocate, Britini D’Angelo said, which is why Rodman for Kids donated 200 tickets to the sensory friendly performance to families in the autism community.

Now if you’ve ever been to see Blue Man Group, I bet you’re wondering how can a performance of the Blue Man Group be sensory friendly?! Well, the Flutie Foundation worked closely with Blue Man Group to ensure that everyone would be comfortable and safe. Before the show, Flutie Foundation staff provided inclusivity training to Rodman for Kids and Charles Playhouse staff in preparation for the performance. In addition to reduced sound and light levels, the Blue Men limited their audience interactions and were more subdued. Earplugs were available upon request, and “chill zones” were available and stocked with sensory toys, including fidget spinners and coloring sheets, in the lobby for anyone in need of a sensory break. Sunglasses were provided and Charles Playhouse staff went around with a one minute warning before any strobe lights were used. In addition, Blue Man Group prepared an awesome guide that can be downloaded here.

Rodman for Kids’ Theatre for Kids program broadens kids’ horizons through access to live, professional theatre. We distribute tickets to youth-focused non-profit organizations, as well as public and private schools in Greater Boston and the Gateway Cities, giving access to the arts to kids who would not otherwise have the opportunity. Since 2003, the Theatre for Kids program has introduced more than 80,000 kids to the magic of performing arts. Rodman for Kids is committed to providing access to the arts for ALL kids.
